The game of whilst is said to have been conceived in the 17th century and became absurdly well-liked in the 18-19th century. Whilst has been around for a lengthy time and yet it is still a popular trick taking card game in our present times.
Whilst is played with four player, these four players are spilt into even partnerships, who face each other across a table. The pairs can be determined by each player picking a card; the two with the highest scores are paired while the two with the lowest form the second pair.
An ordinary pack of playing cards are to be used for whilst. For every suit the ranking of the cards is as follows: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.
First the cards must be shuffled, this is customarily done by the player to the dealers left, once this has been done, the player to the dealers right can cut the cards if it is desired.
The shuffled and cut cards are now dealt out to each player one by one; this should result in each player obtaining 13 cards. Except for the dealer, there final card will be placed face up in the centre; this is to be the trump card. The trump card shall remain there until it’s the dealers turn to play trick.
The individual at the dealers left starts by playing the first trick, they are allowed to play any suit though if they have a trump suit it is best to play with that as this can create a better chance of winning the overall trick.
Moving in a clockwise direction the remaining three players take their turn of playing a card. They have to follow suit of the leading card if possible, if not, then they can play any card. The winner of the trick is the player with the highest trump card, or if no cards were played in the trump suit, the highest ranking card wins. The winner of the trick begins the next trick.
- When all 13 tricks have been played, the pair that won the most tricks throughout the game, adds up there score. The winning pair obtains one point, per trick that exceeded 6. The first pair that reaches the overall score of five wins the game of whilst though in America the score of 7 is sometimes used instead. On rounds where 5 is not reached, the cards are reshuffled and dealt out again, starting another round of whilst until the score of five is reached with one partnership and subsequently ending the game.
Additional points can be acquired through honours. The honours cards are the four top ranking cards A, K, Q, and J. If a partnership held all four of these honours cards at one present time then they are rewarded an additional four points, if they held three honours then they are bestowed two points. If the partnership already has four points at the start of the round they cannot claim honours. The usage of honours in the game
